On 20 September 2024, Malaysia\u2019s Finance Minister II, Senator Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, announced that the Special Financial Zone (SFZ) in Forest City, Johor will become the first location in Malaysia to offer a zero-tax incentive<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0for the Single Family Office (SFO) scheme<\/b><\/strong>.<\/p>

Under this new initiative, Single Family Office Vehicles (SFOVs)<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0will enjoy a 0% tax rate<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0on income generated from eligible investments, with the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC)<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0overseeing the program.

What is an SFOV?
<\/b><\/span>A <\/span>Single Family Office Vehicle (SFOV)<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0is a company owned and operated by one wealthy family. It is established to manage that family’s investments, wealth, and assets across multiple generations, ensuring continuity, privacy, and strategic control.<\/span><\/p>

The Benefits: Family Office 0% Tax Rate<\/b><\/strong><\/p>

To enjoy a 0% tax rate<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0on your investment income, your SFOV must meet a few conditions:
(i)Set up an office on Pulau 1<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0in the Special Financial Zone.
(ii)Operate for up to 20 years<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0(an initial 10 years, plus a possible 10 more.)<\/p>

How to be qualify?
<\/b>
<\/b>To qualify for the tax incentive during the initial period, a SFOV must fulfil below conditions:<\/span><\/p>

(i)Incorporate a new investment holding company<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0in Malaysia.
(ii)Manage at least RM30 million<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0in assets.
(iii)Spend <\/span>RM500,000<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0a year locally.
<\/span>(iv)Hire <\/span>two full-time staff<\/b><\/strong>, including one investment professional earning at least <\/span>RM10,000 per month<\/b><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>

And if you want another 10 years of incentives?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>

To qualify for the tax incentive during the additional period, a SFOV must fulfil below conditions:
<\/b><\/strong>You\u2019ll need RM50 million<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0in assets, four employees<\/b><\/strong>, and spend even more locally.<\/p>

(ii)Manage at least RM50 million<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0in assets.
(iii)Spend minimum <\/span>RM6500,000<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0a year locally.
<\/span>(iv)Employ minimum <\/span>four full-time staff<\/b><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>

Licensing?<\/b><\/strong><\/p>

Normally, managing investments needs a license.
But good news! If your management company only serves your own SFOV, you might be exempted from licensing.<\/p>

Interested?<\/b><\/strong>
You\u2019ll need to pre-register<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0with the Securities Commission Malaysia to check your eligibility.
Full launch expected by mid of 2025<\/b><\/strong>!<\/p>
